We made a pit stop in Iowa City on our way back from Dubuque. This little place was hip, and delivered just what I was craving- a burger. I liked the small menu, the great helpful and friendly staff. Also what a great idea to have one burger, but add extras onto it. Even my SIL didn't know this place existed- and she lives in IA city. Yelp helped me find the place and off we went! Cute design inside to make it feel like you are on a train- or a Pullman car. Very hip place and we recommended it to family that lives in the area.

Great lunch menu with breakfast options, nice beer selection with local and national craft on tap. Good portions, great flavors, friendly staff, loved the atmosphere. I can see it being pricey for college students but it was a great place for us to pop in for lunch and a pint while visiting Iowa City from Vancouver. $48 for turkey sandwich, add fries, steak frites, and two beers.

Well designed, terrific menu, excellent execution. Bar is on par with the kitchen. Elevated comfort food, the food quality far exceeds standards for typical IC fare. Perfect interpretation of affordable luxury.

Excellent choices of surprising and tasty appetizers. The bone marrow took some bravery to order, but it was well worth it, spiced up with fresh, local herbs. It would be hard to be a vegan in this place, though! Pullman calls itself a cafe and has a cafe layout with a counter with stools. It really looks like a train car interior, just like the name. However, this is not your normal cafe food - it serves mostly foodie menu choices. There is a fried chicken plate which reminds you of diner food but with local food philosophy in mind. I look forward to trying more things here.

I had been wanting to go to Pullman ever since it opened and was definitely not disappointed. I went on a Sunday night and didn't have to wait at all to sit at the bar. The bartender Cory was very personable and the service was great. I ordered the shrimp and grits - the presentation was well done and it wasn't too filling, which meant I had room for dessert. And good thing! The bananas foster bread pudding was to die for - it was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. Hats off to that one.

This place is awesome. Recently did the Surly beer dinner and every course was tops. Extremely talented kitchen staff and management knows what they're doing. A new Iowa City must. Try the burger and the Hoosier pie.

This is a solid place. The atmosphere is cool, great music and cool bar. The food is amazing. I real jem in Iowa City. Had the soup and tuna appetizer. Both were very good. They french press the coffee. Service was a 10. I would return

Went here for dinner with a friend. We ordered: -Brussels sprouts -Eggs en cocotte -Shrimp & grits -gin rickey -dark & stormy -french press -NUTELLA PIE The food was excellent, as were the servers. Our food arrived promptly, multiple servers asked us how our meal was, and all seemed excited about the food (a good sign!). I would definitely recommend this new restaurant. Nutella pie - need I say more?

My boyfriend and I were definitely intrigued by the beautiful set up we'd seen passing by Pullman on the street. We went for the first time last week. There's a lot of buzz in IC with Pullman's opening, so don't expect to just pop in and be seated without a wait. Sidecar and old fashioned cocktails were great. A pickle fan, I enjoyed the flavorful bread and butter pickles. My bf got the burger and really loved it. I ordered the fried chicken, which was delightfully crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Not crucial, but a pleasant addition was the side salad that came with the chicken. It had a lot of spinach leaves and felt fairly meaty, which is nice since some side salads can be quite awful and lackluster. Pullman can be pricey for some, but worth a splurge on occasion. For example, their Nutella pie is $9 -- a slice is not necessarily worth the price -- but it was very delicious, rich and paired perfectly with fresh pressed coffee. We intend to go again and are eager to sample their brunch menu.

I was excited to go here with all the reviews. My husband and I were sorely disappointed. The marrow bones were congealed. The bacon relish on top was good but together it was like eating fat with a nice sauce. I had fried chicken and biscuits with honey. The top of the biscuit was burned and the chicken was not cooked. Thankfully it was removed off my bill. My husband had the burger. He said he could have done better going to Shorts. It was not a do over.

They say you should never go somewhere on its opening day - but passing by this place daily made me want to try it even if it was during a blizzard. I had the bread and butter pickles, Spanish cauliflower, and French onion soup. The pickles and cauliflower were awesome. I appreciated the taste of the soup but was slightly disappointed at the huge piece of bread that was a bit burnt in it. It made it pretty hard to eat the soup. Service was good- a bit too overbearing during my first visit. I felt like she was trying to rush me out even though the place was not even half full. I'll chalk it up to opening day jitters. For my second experience- everything was a grand slam. It was two days later during a busy lunch hour. I sat at the bar and ordered a french press which was perfect. 20 oz.'s of peace. I also ordered the quiche - the size was a bit small for the $12 paid- but the taste almost made me forget about that completely. Delicious! I saw a Bloody Mary being prepared and knew I'd need to come back for one. So a few days later I popped in late at night with some friends and we were the most evil people on the planet - the people all bartenders of the world hate... We ordered bloody Mary's at 11 PM. Sorry but not sorry - the Pullman Mary is a knockout. The house mix with the pepper vodka is divine. Add in the awesome garden inserted for garnish and you have one of the best Mary's in IC up there with Shorts and Mickys. It was neat to chat with the cooks and the bartenders on the 2nd visit (Maggie) and 3rd visit (forget her name but she was awesome) were fantastic. All in all- come down with a few friends for a beautiful space, awesome vibe, and great food. Pricey- but once in a while it's good to splurge.

Out of towners looking for something a little different from the "college experience." Jane our waitress was extremely knowledgeable regarding the beer and food selections. I would highly recommend sampling the Iowa draft beers available and the homemade desserts (e.g. buttermilk pie and lemon poppyseed ice cream). Well worth the stop!!

I've been a few times now and will definitely return. I think they're still new and getting everything worked out. I love how they've used the space, and the restaurant looks great. As far as food and drinks go, they serve a brunch menu on weekends and dinner menu all week. So far I'd say the brunch menu is definitely the star. The french press coffee is the highlight. The biscuits and gravy and grits pair nicely and are both very well done. I've also had the grilled turkey club, which I found to be disappointing. It was a very dry sandwich - I believe they may have forgotten the aioli (which the menu claims comes with it). They have a number of items worth sharing with a group, and the coffee cake looks delicious (though I haven't tried it). I've once been once for dinner, and I had the fried chicken. As far as fried chicken goes, it's an average meal. It came with two pieces of fried chicken (thighs, if I recall), a biscuit, and greens. The portion size is pleasant, the biscuit and greens are good, and serving it with a side of honey is a nice touch. That said, the batter was nothing special and the hot sauce as a side wasn't doing anything for me at all - the sauce itself was good, it just didn't work as a side. I'd have preferred a slightly spicier and livelier batter that would have eliminated the need for the seasonings on the side. I'd like to try the steak frites, charcuterie, and marrow in the future.

  • Devin M.

I like the atmosphere of the place but the food was mediocre and over priced. The chicken wasn't much of a chicken, it was fried too much and had small bones in it which almost made me choke. I tried the burger which wasn't too bad but I still would prefer any other burger place in Iowa city because of the price and quality. The burger kind of reminded me of McDonald's with the meat and buns. The menu doesn't have much variety of things as well so if you're bringing a date that's picky I wouldn't choose this place. The place has a good idea of style and atmosphere but not food.

I came for brunch today and the food and atmosphere was awesome. We sat at the bar and Chad the bartender was super nice and made the best bloody Mary's. The eggs en coutte was amazing. I can't wait to go back!

The cheddar & bacon scone (brunch menu) is one of the best things I've ever eaten! The quiche is also amazing. Looking forward to trying their other menus.

Seriously delicious food. We had the fried chicken and the burger. Their homemade pickles are to die for, not to mention the homemade biscuit and local honey with the chicken. Service was decent. We will be back.

Hands down the best Bloody Mary in town, garnished perfectly. My gf had the biscuits and gravy, I had a few bites of hers and was absolutely floored by the flavor. I had the corned beef hash, all the I need to say is, order the corned beef hash! You will not be disappointed! To quote a basic "I literally cannot even." Great atmosphere, any time that I'm in IC I will stop by Pullman!

I went to Pullman for brunch for the first time today the interior alone set the right tone. The small menu isn't limiting at all every choice sounded equally intriguing. We went with the Eggs "en cocette" for 10 dollars and it's the perfect amount of food. The cocktails stand on their own and are worth while. The north Pickney is a nice alternative to the classic mimosa and the Irish coffee is a hard 10. Service was super quick and friendly! Will definitely return!

Nice drink menu NICE drink menu. A few wines, a few craft beers, a few cocktails, but not enough to have you sitting there like "gosh so many choices what should I order!" Every time I go there I get the tuna tartine (next level delicious by the way) with someone else I tried the smoked turkey sandwich which was also awesome. Alot of their dishes will automatically be served with a salad, and the house vinagarette is delicious. A few people I know have had the burger and the fried chicken and said it was mediocre. These dishes may or may not be their strengths?

First time we went here was amazing, the biscuits and gravy were nothing less than heavenly, bacon bourbon breakfast beverage was just too delicious. There was nothing left in my glass or on my plate. The second time we went, it was a 180 degree turnaround. Poor quality, bad bloody mixture, and the waitress was super rude. I understand I look young and college kids are notorious for bad tipping, but bad service is only gonna keep that vicious circle going. Hopefully they get in their groove and figure it out

Went here for happy hour on Friday. I was surprised they still had good deals on a Friday night. We got some nice craft beers on tap (although I was eyeing some of their great whiskeys) and also just a basket of the fries to share. Can't comment on the rest of the food, but what we did have was top notch. The atmosphere kind of reminded me of a trendy Chicago Lincoln Park bar and grill. Definitely will be going back.

Most hip place to eat in Iowa City, especially at the bar. The environment is hipster theme and the only thing I had was a bloodymary. Although it was presented beautifully, it tasted bitter. But everyone has different tastes when it comes to bloody's. I like my spicy, tomatoey and hot.

Very good burgers and fried chicken. But can't you get that anywhere else for under $10? I think so ... Good food if you don't care about spending double. Staff is well trained.

This place definitely deserves 5 stars. The service, the food and atmosphere is great. I recommend sitting outside of the weather is nice. Favorite drink: Barbara Jean- super refreshing Definitely order the fried chicken. It comes with a side of greens to keep it from feeling too heavy, and a biscuit. Alongside they provide you with a vinaigrette and pot of honey- put both on the chicken! The burgers are also huge and delicious. Great ingredients, locally sourced. Worth checking out!

My best friend lives in Memphis, and I've traveled in the South a lot. I've had fried chicken. The fried chicken I had here was some of the best I've ever had. The skin was thin, and just crispy enough. The biscuit was fantastic (and the honey pot made me feel adorably like Winnie the Pooh [I considered this to be good]) and the greens were very fresh. Portions were kind of small, but that meant there was room for dessert. My boyfriend and I got the bananas foster bread pudding and the Nutella pie. I would happily eat either one of those constantly for the rest of my life. Lastly, a server noticed my boyfriend trying to Shazam something, and stopped by our table and told us what the song was. (It was by Diana Ross.) So: two thumbs up. I hope Pullman franchises.

This place rocks. The burger is the star of the show, although I haven't tried the famous fried chicken yet. The chicken salad sandwich was incredible, so was the pulled pork. Good service, and really cool "Brooklyny" vibes. I plan to become a regular here.

good food, good service. they fired out our food very quickly. the portions left us wanting more though (we didn't order any appetizers); price is a tad bit pricey considering the portion sizes.

What a unique breakfast experience!! I went here with some coworkers after night shift. I have to say the staff were great, the breakfast made me feel like I was dining on a French cafe! Everybody loved their meals and you can get beer or mixed drinks in the morning too! My only complaint was that the inside is maybe a little small, but you work with what you got being right downtown Iowa City. I got the Eggs "en cocotte" which was delicious along with a French press pot of coffee!

My experience at Pullman this afternoon was more than pleasant - I would maybe even describe it as cathartic. After being escorted to a table immediately, our waiter very politely and descriptively explained the specials for their happy hour offering great suggestions to pair with one another. Their beer selection, bottled and on tap, is fantastic and reflects an understanding of craft beer pairing with their food selection. You pay for what you get here and you won't be disappointed. Plus, my waiter complimented my Han Solo frozen in Carbonite phone case so obviously extra points.

Very inviting and awesome menu! I was so pleased to find a place like this in Iowa City. It really reminds me of a Boston or New York restaurant. Every time I go, we all order something different and not one thing has been bad. Their thick cut bacon as a side is JUST the way you'd like it to be! Crisp, but not charred, and no huge pieces of gross fat. I highly recommend paying the extra for the pressed coffee. SOOOO GOOD! The desserts are also VERY good. I have never had to wait for a table. Big plus! Even on a weekend morning. I think a lot of the students can't afford it. Another BIG PLUS. Give it a try, you won't regret it!

With each new visit to Iowa City, I've been increasingly impressed as the town becomes more cultured in terms of its food scene. Previously I had been disappointed with the lack of such. The town's locale and potential in the midst of a wealth of local farms had long been untapped. The collaboration with area chefs and the seasonal ingredients they had to offer was just not there. Until now. Before my eyes, I'm seeing the city move beyond the low, bar-centric level it had long rested at. New restaurants are sprouting up with a passion for food and locally sourced goodness. Pullman is a prime example of this movement and its beautiful. Items we ordered: -Roasted Marrow Bones - bacon jam, fresh herbs, sea salt, crusty bread -French Onion Soup - gruyere cheese, crusty bread -Fries with aioli and gruyere sauce -Griddled Turkey Club - pullman loaf, thin sliced griddled turkey, bacon, tomato, avocado, farm greens and aioli -Simple Salad with Tuna - farm greens, pickled shallot, radish, red wine vinaigrette, fines herbes -Double Pullman Burger with added bacon and fried egg - bread & butter pickles, special sauce, american cheese -Spicy Chicken Wings - chicken tossed in a spicy, Chinese inspired sauce -Simple Breakfast - 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes O'Brien, Pullman toast The roasted marrow bones, french onion soup, and pullman burger were the standouts in my eyes. This was my first experience with marrow and I was a happy foodie. The richness of the marrow was supplemented with bacon and packed with flavor, so it acted as the perfect spread atop the crusty bread served alongside. The soup is all that you'd hope for in a french onion soup. Salted broth, dense and crisp croutons, and lots of melted cheese. The same can be said for the burger. Though certainly a messy eat, the combination of beef, cheese, bacon, and egg was just right. Great service and a hip, relaxing atmosphere were the perfect pairing with the impressive noms. Keep rocking IC, and keep rocking Pullman.

In order to fill my tummy before browsing the Iowa Arts Fair on a Sunday morning, I stopped in for brunch at Pullman. Having previously enjoyed happy hour here, I wanted to check out their eggs and such menu. I chose to sit at the bar and the trendy bearded, bun-on-head, hipster bartender poured me as glass of cool water and left me to peruse the menu. A few feet away he was concocting Bloody Mary's with extravagant relishes, so I ordered one. The pickled asparagus spear and crispy bacon slice were a great addition. I also ordered their wonderful French press coffee as a wake me up. After asking for recommendations, I landed on the Eggs en croutte. Served in a shallow dish, the perfectly prepared combination of medium fried eggs, crumbled bacon, porcini mushroom sauce set atop a later of breakfast potatoes was rich, tasty, and filling. I ate about half before I asked my hipster to take it away. Next time I plan to check out their granola encrusted French toast. Service was right on as the employees seem to love their jobs as they cannot help but sing along to the lively popular classic rock track that sounds throughout the joint. Iowa City should be proud of this it-feels-like-im-in-chicago place.

First time here. Very good and considerate service. I asked the waitress what she would recommend and I took one of her recommendations. It turned out to be really good. The corned beef hash was very delicious even though at the end the beef turned out to be saltier than what I like. Very fast service. We were done in 40 minutes!

Finally got around to breakfast here this morning. We enjoyed the Counter Culture French Press coffee, but my wife preferred the coffee at Ride, and I would agree with her. Counter Culture is a pretty good roaster but I'm assuming they chose a kind of middle of the road roast to have broadest appeal. I had the corned beef hash, with the corned beef done in-house, it was great. If I were to nitpick, I would say that the potatoes o'brien could have been crispier/more caramelized, but they were very tasty and well prepared. My wife had the Eggs in Cocotte, which is "potatoes O'Brien, oven dried tomato, porcini cream, two sunny side eggs, Grana Padano and crumbled bacon." She would get it again, she ordered with over-easy as she doesn't care for sunny side up. The porcini cream sauce was very special but it migrated to the bottom and she wasn't aware of its flavorfulness until she got half-way through the dish. She loved the roasted tomato. Ambience was nice and bright, they make good use of mirrors to create a space inside the narrow confines of what used to be Mott Drug. I enjoyed it about equally to Ride which I also gave 5 stars; my wife preferred Ride, but liked the ambience in Pullman better. I would say that Pullman has more gastropub ambitions which it pulls off well, and Ride has more of a Cajun/Creole influence, although they both lean towards the new Southern. I need to compare their fried chicken.

Cool atmosphere, like an old Pullman Dining Car for a train. The waitresses and cooks are all pretty hipster, and upbeat, and friendly. It's like a sit-down place, but not so fancy that you feel the need to dress up and make an event of it. Their drinks are pretty good. They are expensive, but reasonable at happy hour. The salmon tartare is very tasty, and the turkey club was excellent. They seem to be really excited and proud of their food and it's local sources. I would definitely go back again.

This place was perfect! Loved the ambiance, with the exposed brick, the long bar, diner feel with some music playing. For a min you might forget you are in Iowa. I'm originally from San Diego where we have amazing food so I'm always searching for yummy fresh food so this place was a pleasant surprise. I had the Cuban sandwich which was very tasty and they didn't skimp on the pork, don't forget the fries which are fresh cut and perfectly seasoned! I also had a very refreshing specialty mimosa which hit the spot. My husband had the Bacon avocado egg sandwich which was also good and loaded with avocado. I highly recommend and will be back!!

The first thing to note is the intimate cooking environment. We sat at the bar...which I recommend. Watch the food being crafted. Let the anticipation build. Make conversation with your chef. Become part of the experience of creation. Order a local beer. Enjoy. The food is made with devotion to the arts. I wish the menu was as diverse as the characters making it. They are limiting themselves to the safe and that's the only reason for the missing star. Extend yourselves and join greatness. Just my two cents. I did have a spiritual moment with the bananas foster though. So maybe 4 1/2 stars. Much love to The Pullman.

In line with many of the other reviews - we really enjoyed Pullman and I'm excited they're in the area! We weren't blown away with everything we tried, but were impressed with a number of dishes. Four of us ended up splitting a number of appetizers and entree's and it was a good way to go for dinner. The atmosphere, as described by others, is reminiscent of a train car with some great decor, nice lighting and artwork. The ambiance is great as everything sets the stage for a laid back experience that encourages conversation. We sat by the front window on opening weekend and it was a good time to be able to chat and watch the goings on outside. Drink menu is solid and had enough to keep all of us busy with a good number of legit beers and mixed drinks. For dinner - the appetizer menu was where we did most of our digging and we were happy with what we had. YOU MUST TRY THE ROASTED MARROW BONES. We haven't seen these outside of the west coast and they are fantastic. Spreadable and a little salty on crostini - in a word fantastic! The salmon tartar was excellent and something we've missed. The house made pickles and charcuterie plate were good. The brussels and cauliflower salads were solid and made for good sharing plates. Neiter were the best we've had, but were nice additions to the menu. The main course options for dinner are limited, but it works given the fun stuff elsewhere on the menu. The signature dish is the friend chicken and it was middle of the road for us. The breading wasn't super memorable and we've found that as the breading goes, so goes the chicken. However, the honey and house made hot sauce that come with it were excellent. Perfecting the chicken would make the experience with the honey and hot sauce something to really get excited about! For dessert, we split the nutella pie and some ice cream - both of which were good and right in line with expectations. I'm excited to try the stout float at some point. In the end, Pullman is an excellent addition to downtown and somewhere that will only continue to get better. Service was excellent, ambiance was warm and inviting and the food had glimpses of the magnificient! A welcome new spot in town and one we're looking forward to trying again.

Tried the burger with French fries. It was amazing!! My favorite burger place has been updated! It was perfectly medium rare, soft and tender. I was soooo full to order anything after it, I like the place from inside, clean, neat and very good place to go on date or hanging out with friends. The waitress was very helpful, with very good positive energy that made us feel welcomed! I will certainly comebacks and try another dish from the menus.

Crafty place for sure. Nice list of speciality cocktails. I had a few and them sampled a local brew. The menu is very tempting as I wanted to try a little bit of everything. Katie seated us and ended up being our server as well. Definitely had some charm and knew what she was talking about. Nice atmosphere here as well and Iowa City as a whole. Love it there and can't wait to visit again

After reading much fanfare over the recently opened Pullman Diner, I've visited a couple of times for lunch over the past two weeks. IC certainly knows how to hype a new restaurant before it opens, and after some recent underwhelming openings I went into this place with high hopes. The interior is classy, the same kind of speakeasy vibe as Clinton Street Social Club but in a tighter space. And this place was packed! For both visits only bar seating was available, which does have the benefit of an open kitchen for watching food be prepared in real time. During the first visit I went for the open-faced tuna sandwich, along with a side of fries. Tasty, the olives and other features were nice but the bread was literally tough to eat and the portion was smaller than expected. A solid 3.5/5 for the sandwich--a bit overpriced at $11, even if it does come with a side salad. I agree with other reviewers that Pullman may be more attractive if some of the prices were cut (even a $1-2 cut may help; get some of those cocktails under $10!) I wonder if the price is meant to keep out some of the bro crowd... clearly business is booming so they may see no need to. During the second visit I tried the eggs en cocotte, two sunny side up eggs over potatoes, with cream, grana padano cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and bacon. The dish was good, but not great, as the flavors didn't quite come together--which is unfortunate, because for the price ($10) an egg dish like this needs to fully deliver on flavor. I also opted for the French press of Counter Culture coffee--this is one of the only places to find French press, of Counter Culture no less, in the downtown area. Not sure if it was a too light roast, or not enough coffee beans ground for the press, but the coffee could have used a little more body. Customer service has been great on both visits, and the curated music playlist by the Englert Theater director is a neat touch (at one point I heard Jim James' reverbed vocals lilting through the restaurant). All in all, Pullman has solid (but not mind blowing) food and a hip atmosphere. But for the price, the food needs to deliver more memorable flavors. Pullman would be wise to either hone the menu items to make them pack more punch, or reduce the prices a bit.

Pullman is a wonderful hipster style place, New American if your being technical. Anyway whatever you call the genre of food they are awesome here. My first time was the fried chicken which comes with homemade hot sauce, biscuit with honey, and greens. They did an excellent job with this entree. I did also get a side of marrow which is hard to find around these parts and would suggest others try this at least once. We came back the next day for breakfast as they do have a unique menu as well keeping some traditional favs on the menu. I had the egg & Cheese grits topped with pork jus and kale....It was amazing! This place will be a gem for a long time, they got the right things going on here and can only get better with time.

Pullman is a solid choice. The atmosphere is great, the servers are friendly, and the food is very delicious. My favorites are the burratta, smoked salmon appetizer, and the buttermilk pie. The French fries are also irresistible. 9/10 would recommend.

The Pullman Diner. A cozy, but classy diner located in downtown Iowa City. Named after Pullman Dining cars that used to (and some still do I believe) run the rails in Europe. The interior captures the essence of this with a long curved Architectural ceiling piece and a row of booths invoking a dining car experience. The diner created from multiple powerhouse local restaurant owners (Reds Alehouse, Big Grove, Stella's, to name a few) and Nate Keading, I was looking forward to a good meal with an experience. I visited over lunchtime with a group of co-workers. There was six of us (I would not go with more, seems more like parties of 4 or less would be perfect). The greeted us and we were promptly seated. The wait staff was great and our drinks were always full and plates cleared. Very professional and extremely friendly. The food was quite good. I ordered a round of the Roasted Bone Marrow for everyone to try. Bacon Jam is the real deal. There was mixed reviews on the marrow (mainly due to the mere ideal of eating marrow) but all did agree the bacon jam was all that you could imagine. I followed this up with the Pullman Burger. A good burger, but nothing extrodinary. I was actually a little disappointed in the bun, but the pickles and special sauce made up for the bun. Fries were seasoned well, and complimented the burger. Overall, this place has potential. I did not get a chance to try a craft brew on tap, nor sit at the bar to watch the chefs work. Something that I am sure would enhance the experience of Pullman Diner. Until then, I must leave it with a 4 star, as I do so some improvement still in the future.

A few years back downtown IC did not have much of a restaurant scene. Sure, you could get drunk and stumble across a burrito, grilled cheese or some other greasy fare but downtown lacked legitimate dining places. Pullman is about as legit as the come. I was in town to see a friend and he recommended Pullman for breakfast. Pullman is the quintessential retro sleek cafe. Remember that painting Nighthawk? From the brick walls to the retro pendent lighting, Pullman is the cafe from the painting. Service was quick and the staff was friendly. The breakfast was real good. Went with the special breakfast sandwich and was not disappointed. Wish this place was in Des Moines! I will have to go back for dinner some time and sit at the bar.

All the stars! This place is quickly becoming one of our favorites. The huevos (potatoes & black beans with two eggs and home made tortillas), croque madame, all the home made soups...you really can't go wrong here. Interesting drink menu, friendly staff and a cool environment round out this classic upscale diner feel.

Great burger. Atmosphere is similar to that in a big city. Would suggest cloth napkins, hipper music, and a quieter kitchen.

Last week I had the pleasure of eating lunch at Pullman. I had a beet salad with walnuts and goat cheese. I also had an amazing coffee. I don't want to say too much (because I want to be able to get a table without having to wait the next time I go in) but Pullman is pretty damn good.

We had dinner here on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait to be seated indoors, even after the host called us back to be seated. The food and service was good overall and their menu had some unique offerings.

perhaps the best burger in town! Frisco melt nearly as good as the burger. probably best to go in summer when students are out of town.

Pullman was great. Every item on the menu is made from local ingredients. What we all know is: fresh, real ingredients = a good meal. Our table ordered the beet salad, fried chicken, burger, vegetable soup, and pickles. Everything was delicious and perfectly portioned. In addition, we had asked our waitress a few questions about the ingredients and the restaurant itself and she was able to inform us of everything. Bottom line, the food is great and I recommend giving it a try.

Had "Fried Turkey" club. with avocado, bacon and tomato. I liked it and the only thing fried about it was turkey cooked on a grilled, very nice. My companion had open faced tuna, very fresh thin sliced tuna and she really liked it. Has a bar vibe and even at lunch very loud. There are some unusual items on the menu including, and a nice place for something a bit different in Iowa City. A bit pricey!

Unpretentious menu and service. The fried chicken was awesome and the drinks were reasonably priced and well made. A nice atmosphere where you can enjoy good food and drinks with friends.

Great, unique joint with friendly staff. My husband ordered the chicken salad sandwich with a side of fries. He said he would have preferred it to not be toasted, but otherwise it was average tasting. He said he's had better chicken salad elsewhere, but it was still good. The fries were crispy and on the border of being "too" salty, but still tasty. He swallowed that down with a delicious bottle of Sam Adams Oatmeal Stout. I was excited to see a beet salad on their menu as it is something I usually get at places, if it is an option. I would say that it's OK. It's not the best beet salad I've ever had, but I did finish it. It could benefit from a few more walnuts, goat cheese chunks and perhaps another ingredient like red onion, cranberries, or avocados. I opted for a Brandywine beer on tap that actually tasted better in the sample our server gave me. I liked that she did offer me samples of the two I was deciding between. The music playing throughout was great, but a bit loud for 2:00pm. Blame it on our age. Most of the other bodies present were the college-aged staff. We would definitely go back. I appreciate the fact that they use all fresh and local ingredients, if possible. And of course if it were warmer, we would have eaten outside. The front patio is a great addition!

As a UIowa alum visiting Iowa City for the weekend, I was glad to see IC is stepping up their foodie game. Pullman is a great spot. Love the vibe and decor. Sat at the counter and enjoyed a bottle of wine while I shared several plates with a friend. The charcuterie offered a good sampling of cheeses and meats. The salmon tartare was delicious, as was the kale caesar salad. But the salad could have used 1-2 more shrimp. We also had to try the steak tartare that was on special for the night. It had a nice heat to it. All courses were accompanied by good bread. Definitely worth checking out!

My husband and I had two opportunities for date nights this past week - a VERY rare occasion - and both times we drove all the way down to Iowa City from Cedar Rapids to dine at Pullman because we liked it so much. Everything was outstanding! On our first visit, we shared an order of popcorn; then I had the fried chicken and my husband had a burger. I loved that the chicken came with a super light salad (and biscuit) so it wasn't a real heavy meal. My husband's burger was crazy good - everything on it was thoughtfully placed and all the flavors put it above just about any other burger in Iowa. We were very impressed by our server's level of knowledge about the beer and wine menu. We were able to taste several beers on tap before placing our order which also was nice, considering they were beers we weren't familiar with. All in all, a fabulous dining experience! Our second visit, we had dinner at Nodo to try something new but came over to Pullman for dessert and drinks, which, again, did not disappoint! We shared the buttermilk pie with lemon poppyseed ice cream. It was so delicious and refreshing. Their ice cream flavor of the day was sweet corn and we're still kicking ourselves for not ordering that too, even just to try it! Everything here is good - amazing, thoughtful food, great outdoor seating, and impeccable service!

Ate here on a Thursday night about 6ish and were seated right away. Fun atmosphere. They have done a great job in a small narrow space. Hubby had the Pullman burger and would order it again in a heartbeat. I had the pulled pork and it was delicious. Just the right amount of food. We shared a basket of fries. Staff was friendly and helpful. If you are looking for a little more than just basic food you can't go wrong here!

Went to Pullman for the first time today. When I walked in, it was completely packed! So I assumed it would be a great place, my group and I had to go eat outside because the wait would of been an hour, which was completely fine. As we got the menu, it was small in the amount of options. One side was food, the other was drinks, which is pretty common, I think, at a bar and diner. I ordered the Croqué Madame which is essentially a ham sandwich with a cheese sauce on top and a sunny side egg on top of it all. It was pretty thick, although I just kept thinking, this is just a ham and cheese sandwich with an egg and it's not all in the bun, this is just 2x more what it would cost me. The sandwich alone was $9.50 which is a little pricey for a college town. Overall, I wasn't a huge fan of the sandwich for the price. My friend also ordered wings and when he asked for ranch, which, from what I know is pretty common to ask with wings. They didn't have ranch, or any sauce for the wings, he had 5 medium wings for $15, which was also considered pricey for him. I wasn't a huge fan of my dish, my friend wasn't either. I did have two people in my group that ordered the burgers and they absolutely loved it. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but I can't give this place 5/5 because the options of the food for the price wasn't reasonable for me.

Great atmosphere but overpriced and not that great. I got the fried chicken, which was quite bland. The side salad I got was pitifully small and unoriginal. Sandwiches are 11-12 dollars and don't come with a side. The fries had a weird fishy taste to them.

What a great experience! We really enjoyed our drinks, the appetizers and meals. The Dark and Stormy was fabulous and the Salmon Tartar, Bread and Butter Pickles, and the cheese and charcuterie were all wonderful. The fried chicken was really great. Make sure to have the biscuits with honey. That alone was worth coming in again! Can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu!

First trip to the Pullman. We've been waiting for a few weeks so that the lines weren't too bad. 20 minute wait for 2 during prime dinner time. Not bad at all. I ordered a Manhattan for a cocktail, and it was excellent. The mixologists (a step above a bartender) were very solid, and the balance was right on. The soaked cherry was surprisingly good. My girlfriend had a Dark and Stormy and thought it was very good too. I had the fried chicken and my girlfriend had the burger. Her opinion of the burger was much like the other ones you will read here. Very, very good. The pickles are great, and the fries are fresh and very tasty. Prepared quite well. The fried chicken was good. I am a bit of a fried chicken snob, so I am very picky. I consider Sweetie Pies in Cedar Rapids to be the best fried chicken in Iowa. Pullman's fried chicken was tasty, but slightly dry and a little overcooked, the spices could have been a bit more pronounced, but the tooth feel was excellent and the crust was very nice. The house made hot sauce was a very good addition and stepped the chicken up a bit. The side salad was good for palate cleansing and the biscuit was very good. I've never had a pan "biscuit" but with honey it was right on. For dessert we split the Hoosier pie. Which is a sugar cream pie with lemon poppyseed ice cream. Again, I'm a bit picky, as I was raised on sugar cream pies and Mrs Wicks pies. Pullman's is great. The taste was custardy, with a nice hint of lemon, and dense and rich. The lemon poppyseed ice cream was a fantastic choice. The ambiance is great. The place really does have the feel of a Pullman Car, and the staff is very attentive and responsive without being annoying. We sat at the counter and got to watch how they did their thing. It really was a very smooth operation, and the chef was on top of what was going on. Will I go back? Yup. It's a great choice. The bill matched how we felt we ate. A solid 4.5 stars. Hit that chicken out of the park, and it would be 5 stars.

Every great diner I have eaten at has a large breakfast and dinner menu filled with plenty of classics, Pullman is the opposite. The selection is limited and most of the food they offer is pretty elegant to be considered diner food (I.e. Bone marrow, scallops). Having said that, both times I have eaten here my food was delicious. The corned beef hash was on point, and it was clear they use fresh ingredients. My friend ordered the steak and it came pre-cut, which bothers me because it loses a lot of it's juices. All in all, Pullman puts out good food, but the menu and the high prices prevent me from considering it a true diner, it's more of an upscale place.

I wish I could give 4.5 stars, and I'll likely upgrade to 5 stars after I try more of the menu. The burger is fantastic (actually cooked medium rare, which is rare in Iowa City) and the butter pickles and mustardy-sauce are delicious, but not overpowering. The fries were a bit over-seasoned (to me, anyway) and the seasoning reminds me of curly fry seasoning, which I really like, but with Pullman's fries you can actually taste the garlic and cayenne pepper. There's no need to dip them in anything! The space itself is well-designed and comfortable, and the staff is attentive and friendly! It was also fun watching the cook while sitting at the bar. It's going to be really hard not to go to Pullman everyday for lunch.

The atmosphere was great. The bone marrow was good, but I had never ordered it from a restaurant before to compare. I thought the brussel sprouts were good also. The last thing we tried was the open faced tuna sandwich and we were not as much of a fan of that. It could use more sauce/kick to add more flavor. I am excited to try other items on the menu sometime.

I've now gone for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails. I can say I'm very impressed with the direction the food is headed and see a good amount of room for excellence. When I've gone it's been odd hours, so pretty slow, but the staff was always on their toes and very welcoming. Loved my experience, can't wait to go back.

Hipster awesomeness! Love this addition to Iowa City. They have a good variety of house made food, and do a solid brunch (which I think is hard to find around these parts). Try the French toast, brioche goodness at its best. They know that a fried egg on anything is a good bet. Glad they are here!

This place rocks. The burger is the star of the show, although I haven't tried the famous fried chicken yet. The chicken salad sandwich was incredible, so was the pulled pork. Good service, and really cool "Brooklyny" vibes. I plan to become a regular here.

Great burger. Atmosphere is similar to that in a big city. Would suggest cloth napkins, hipper music, and a quieter kitchen.

We had dinner here on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait to be seated indoors, even after the host called us back to be seated. The food and service was good overall and their menu had some unique offerings.

Last week I had the pleasure of eating lunch at Pullman. I had a beet salad with walnuts and goat cheese. I also had an amazing coffee. I don't want to say too much (because I want to be able to get a table without having to wait the next time I go in) but Pullman is pretty damn good.

I've experienced two pleasant meals at Pullman - breakfast and dinner. We stopped in Wednesday night feeling ravenous. We ordered the French fries to take the edge off - great idea! The fried chicken was delicious and I wish I had saved room for dessert. I might add the waitress was very attentive without being bothersome! We will definitely be back!

Great atmosphere but overpriced and not that great. I got the fried chicken, which was quite bland. The side salad I got was pitifully small and unoriginal. Sandwiches are 11-12 dollars and don't come with a side. The fries had a weird fishy taste to them.

Awesome food. Had the fried chicken - was excellently fried and the spicy sauce they provided to put on it was excellent. Great service. Food came out quickly. I would love if the on tap beer menu was expanded.

  • Melissa Z.

Hipster awesomeness! Love this addition to Iowa City. They have a good variety of house made food, and do a solid brunch (which I think is hard to find around these parts). Try the French toast, brioche goodness at its best. They know that a fried egg on anything is a good bet. Glad they are here!

Most hip place to eat in Iowa City, especially at the bar. The environment is hipster theme and the only thing I had was a bloodymary. Although it was presented beautifully, it tasted bitter. But everyone has different tastes when it comes to bloody's. I like my spicy, tomatoey and hot.
